Where Students Meet Discovery

Our first field trip to USC was honestly unforgettable. We got to meet researchers at the kidney research center and walk through labs where scientists are growing human synthetic kidneys in a dish, studying transparent mouse organs to understand disease mechanisms. We had the opportunity to look into one of the world’s most powerful microscopes that researchers use to see how a living kidney works at the cellular level. We also visited the USC Dialysis Center, where clinical director Dr. Ghaffari helped us understand the real burden of kidney replacement therapy on patients and their families. We were welcomed by Dr. Carolyn Meltzer, Dean of the Keck School of Medicine of USC, which made the day feel extra special. The highlight was attending the Dean’s Transformative Lecture Series and listening to Dr. Ardem Patapoutian talk about ion channels and how their function make us feel—and we were beyond excited that we even got to ask the very last question. It was a day that made science feel real, exciting, and within reach.
